Most football players can be taught and trained how to run fast!
Again, if you've forgotten, the work of the actual speed is defined as 2-8 seconds full speed, full intensity running with full (minimum 3 minutes) recovery.

Because running fast is undoubtedly a skill. And there are certain elements that must be functioning developed in order to obtain consistent results.
And these results are from a focus on the following five areas, in no particular order.
Basic speed 1: TEACH appropriate ACTION arm

All the action of the arm should be held across the shoulders. Athletes reference to keep your elbows locked at about 90 degrees. At the front, the hands should not cross the midline of the body.

Fundamental # 2 speed: FAST TRAIN, run fast
I do not care what sport you coach. If all your training is a submaximal pace, then you are not going to develop faster athletes. It's that simple.
This principle is not only for track sprinters. From football to soccer to lacrosse and everything else, athletes need to form quickly if they want to be fast.
I'm not saying a football player should not be an aerobic work, but they spend a lot of time in the acceleration of the ball and to / from a defensive player.
To get where they want to go faster, they should have a greater rate of acceleration. And it comes to a job accelerating at full speed with full recovery as I mentioned above.
For some people, it is difficult to understand. 4 seconds sprints with 3 minutes of rest seems to be a waste of time.
Believe me, it is not.
But if you are coaching real speed / power athletes like sprinters and football players, high intensity sprints with full recovery * must * be * foundation * training.
Aerobic exercise is the recovery speed work, it does not get 'shaped' specific requirements football.
This is not even a debatable concept.
Fundamental speed 3: be patient
I do not mean just be patient with your athletes that you break down to build them.
I say be patient in each repetition of speed work.
Speed can not be forced. Athletes must learn to ignore the voice in his head that says' try harder, run faster, push, strain, hurry up.
Instead, they should let the speed come to them.
During acceleration, the contact time with the ground going from long to short. But most athletes are in a big rush to get up and their technical speed "normal" full race.
This is the equivalent of moving the gears of a sports car as quickly as possible. It will not optimize performance.
Athletes need to be patient. Spend more time on the ground as they overcome the inertia and speed. Stride length and frequency should increase naturally, following the application of effective force, strength and mechanics. They should not be forced.
Athletes must achieve triple extension with each stride, perfectly complementing the action down (and back).
Instead, I see athletes who are trying to shift gears too fast. This results in a slower speed early in the race.
Since an athlete can maintain a higher speed for 1-2 seconds before deceleration begins, impatience during acceleration will cost speed and time at every step they take.
Fundamental speed 4: become stronger
If you work with athletes, especially teenage athletes, then the time spent developing his physical strength in the gym should be a fundamental element of your program.
Athletes who are not focused on the development of force have a very low glass ceiling that will prevent them from making significant gains in speed.
This is just common sense - the more you are, the more you can propel your body forward.
But that does not mean entering the gym and lifting like a bodybuilder.
When I go to the weightroom I see the following unnecessary training athletes.
Examples of elevators, for our purposes, are a waste of time:
- Nothing on a machine such as hamstring curls, leg extensions
Calves, Smith machine squats, etc.
- The movements of single joints such as bicep curls
- Flies chest, triceps extensions, etc.
While these are all great movements for looking good at the beach, I cringe when I see the athletes during the season by doing these lifts as part of their training. And I see most often, sadly enough.

Fundamental speed 5: span, lower
The ability to use force to land and, more specifically, the specific mass force is the main mechanical consideration that you should spend your time during each session of the speed or the drill session.
Athletes have a variety of issues affecting their lower body mechanics.
But the vast majority of them come from a lack of physical strength and the inability to recover the heel under the hips, step on the opposite knee and drive the foot down into the ground so that it lands in the hips and not in front of the center of mass.
