American football is the number one sports team fans in the U.S. Outside the U.S. and Canada, it is called football, to distinguish it from other football games like football or rugby. American football evolved from rugby at the end of the nineteenth century.

The game is a team sport. The goal is to handl e the ball in the end zone of the opponent and score points. The ball can be advanced by carrying it or pass to a teammate. Points are scored by carrying the ball in the end zone, passing to a teammate past the goal line or kicked between the goal posts. The team that has scored the most points when the time expires is declared the winner.

English colonial settlers brought the game of football for the Americas in the early seventeenth century. Some 200 years later, football was introduced in American colleges, and in 1867 the first set of rules of football were established at Princeton College. They were very similar to the rules of football. The game was picked up by other colleges like Rutgers, Columbia, Yale and Harvard. In 1876, the Intercollegiate Football Association was formed to develop rules that were similar to rugby union.

Some modifications were made to the game after it was found that it was dangerous and cause high dead. It was not until 1920 that the professional league games were launched. The American Professional Football Association (AFA) was launched in 1921. It was renamed the NFL (National Football League) in 1922. The first championship was between the Chicago Bears and New York Giants.

In 1960, another league was formed, called the American Football League (AFL). At the end of the 1966 season, the NFL champions played the AFL Super Bowl champions for the first time the World Cup football. Football is played in a number of levels in the United States and elsewhere. The majors are: National Football League (high-level professional league of men), NFL Europe, College Football, College Football Mexico, British Collegiate American Football League, German Football League, League North American football and female football.


Football trophies are usually made of metal or plastic, depicting scenes of players kicking or wrestling.
